Oliver Twist is the second novel by English writer Charles Dickens, published in 1838. Oliver Twist is the story of Oliver and his attempts to stay true to himself in a society that refuses to help. Oliver becomes an orphan after the death of his unmarried mother, gets shuffled from place to place, gets exploited, and even ends up with a gang of petty thieves. This book is an early example of a social novel and draws the reader’s attention to various contemporary evils like child labour, the recruitment of children as criminals, and many more evils done to children.

Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic who is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. The prolific author of short stories, plays, novellas, novels, fiction, and non-fiction, Dickens is the creator of the world’s most memorable fictional characters. He is the author of over a dozen of highly acclaimed novels David Copperfield, The Adventures of Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, Bleak House, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend. Dickens's novels were initially serialized in weekly and monthly magazines, and then reprinted in standard book formats.
